Picric Acid

CAS No. :-
88-89-1

Organic compound with uses as a high explosive and as a yellow dye.

Description

Picric acid, also known as 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), is a yellow crystalline compound with powerful explosive properties. It was historically used as an explosive and in the manufacture of dyes and medicines. However, due to its high sensitivity to shock and friction, picric acid has largely been replaced by less hazardous compounds in explosive applications.

Picric acid also finds use in the field of chemistry as a reagent for the detection of metals and in the preparation of certain picrate salts. Its bright yellow color and explosive properties have led to its occasional use in pyrotechnics. Despite its limited contemporary applications, picric acid remains an interesting compound in the history of chemistry and explosives. Proper safety precautions must be taken when handling picric acid due to its explosive nature.
