Di Octyl Phthalate

CAS No. :-
117-81-7

Plasticizer commonly used in plastics and polymers.

Description

Di Octyl Phthalate (DOP), also known as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, is a colorless and odorless liquid organic compound. It belongs to a class of chemicals called phthalates and is widely used as a plasticizer. DOP’s primary role is to enhance the flexibility and durability of various polymer products, particularly polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It achieves this by reducing the intermolecular forces between polymer chains, allowing them to move more freely.

DOP is commonly used in the manufacturing of PVC-based products such as vinyl flooring, cables, and synthetic leather goods. It imparts desirable characteristics to these materials, including improved flexibility, resistance to cracking, and durability. In the automotive industry, DOP is employed in the production of flexible PVC components used in vehicle interiors. While it has numerous industrial applications, there are concerns about its potential adverse health effects, particularly in children’s products and certain medical devices. Therefore, regulations and safety measures are in place to ensure its safe use in various applications.
